Kavals developed from the old Balkan/Anadole mountain shepherd flutes. They are end-blown chromatic flutes,
blown by the sharpened edge on the end of the flute.
The bulgarian kaval has 8 playing holes (7 in front and 1 in the back for the thumb)
and usually four more unfingered intonation holes near the bottom of the kaval.
there are four different registers that can be achieved with the Bulgarian kaval. What controls which register the performer works in is mostly the air flow and the position of the lips. A very characteristic sound of kaval is achieved in the lowest register (kaba).
The kavals made by us are traditionally all wood-made.
No plastic/metal rings are used in producing this kaval
The wood material is specially chosen, acoustically rich, walnut, mahagony or cherry wood. Our kavals are tuned and beautiful. Traditionally, they are easily detachable into three parts, which makes them comfortable instrument to move and travel with. Have a look at our flute cases, they offer perfect protection as they are hand felted.
Best for the kaval is to be oiled regularly with walnut oil - both inside and outside.
If you are playing daily it is recommended to oil the kaval once or twice a week. If you play from time to time you should oil it once or twice a month. Use a small cotton cloth to keep it dry after playing.
